Custom steel and iron parts combine sand or investment casting with CNC machining and micro machining. The component enquiry can therefore address both the chosen cast form and the detailed machining work required for the finished geometry.

Steel or iron casting before machining

Choose the steel or iron material and the intended sand or investment casting route for the particular part. Then identify the dimensions, surfaces and small details requiring further work. Keeping casting and machining requirements distinct makes it easier to define the required geometry without assuming that a general micro-machining capability sets a numerical tolerance for every feature.

Broaching, wire EDM and other operations

Machining directions include broaching, drilling, etching or chemical machining, laser machining, milling, turning and wire EDM. Rapid prototyping and other machining services are also offered as directions to discuss. Select the relevant operations for the component and identify where they apply, including any micro-machined details that need their own dimensional acceptance criteria.

Wider materials for machining enquiries

Machining material capabilities include aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, hardened metals, precious metals, stainless steel and steel alloys. These wider choices should be considered against the selected machining operation rather than treated as a single casting configuration. A useful enquiry specifies the exact material, component geometry and required operation sequence, giving the custom steel or iron casting discussion a clear boundary where it meets the machining work.
